Exit the Hilton PJ, cross the road, turn left and then turn right; you will find Chutneys on the right.
Chutneys is an Indian restaurant which didn’t seem to be very busy. I have no idea why as the food is exceptionally tasty.
I visited Chutneys a couple of times during my trip to Malaysia, primarily as it was really easy to reach from the hotel. The first of my visits were with a colleague.
We ordered two beers and were given 2 glasses of Tiger (MYR 12.90); these came from a can but hey – I am not that fussy. The beer was cold. The menu here is fairly succinct, but sometimes I think that its better to cook a few dished really well, than to cool many dishes not so well.
I opted for Butter Chicken (which is what Chutneys are famous for in Kuala Lumpur), my colleague had Lamb Rogan Josh. We had some Garlic Naan and some rice too.
Our food came quickly; my curry was very tasty; a fairly simple dish prepared and cooked exceptionally well. The lamb was very tender; my colleague almost ordered more, and the Naan was fantastic (we did order more). We added another round of beers and then one more round for good measure.
The bill was MYR 101. I felt this offered exceptional value remembering that beer in Malaysia has a very high tax element; without the beers the food would have cost less than MYR 35 (or less than £7).
Service here was acceptable. Staff members didn’t really chat but perhaps there was a language barrier somewhere! My Malay is not good…
I wouldn’t recommend Chutneys if you are looking for fine dining or amazing service. If however you are looking for a really tasty meal near the Hilton PJ, then this is the place for you.
I will be back during my next Malaysian adventure.
